ower pole broken: standby generator for emergency power supply at mains power failure

Diesel Generators for emergency power supplyDiesel Generators for emergency power supply

Generators for independent supply in case of power failure.

An emergency / standby generator can be started at power failure manually or automatically (AMF). By using a battery UPS system uninterruptible power supply is ensured.

Standby generators / emergency genset power systems are required and self-evident for hospitals, government agencies, data centers and other sensitive areas. Since the last major power failures and blackouts in Europe and even in Germany, the demand increased for smaller and mobile generators for emergency supply, for small and medium-sized companies, as well as for installation in single-familiy homes.

How works the changeover at power failure?

In case of mains failure or blackout, there are two ways to activate a generator:

  1. Manual by key switch or push of a button.
  2. Automatic start / stop by mains power failure

Requires an appropirate electrical installation, which can be realized easy and inexpensive by a local electrician.

Depending on the generator type and performance it is useful to install a socket for power feed near the generator site for easy connection between home grid and generator set.

Manual power switch at mains failure

For manual emergency power supply the generator has to be started by hand. In case of power failure, the installed manual mains / generator switch has to set to generator operation. There are three positions: Mains - 0 - Generator.

After returning of the power from the grid the main switch has to be returned to the grid or mains position to disconnect the generator. Then the generator set has to be stopped manually.

Automatic emergency power by mains failure (blackout)

A power generator with automatic start/stop by mains failure (AMF) option, the following described steps will do automatically:

  1. The grid distribution is monitored. If one or several phases of the grid fail the standby power generator is started automatically.

  2. When the power generator is fully operational after a time of max. 10 seconds the grid is disconnected and the output of the generator is switeched to the installation of the house automatically.

  3. Returns the power of the grid (mains power) and is stable the installation of the house is switched back to the grid automatically.

  4. Stays the grid stable for a period of 1 - 2 minutes the power generator is stopped automatically.

A display on the diesel generator or the AMF panel monitores engine, generator and mains parameters, such as voltage and frequency. The battery voltage of the starter battery is also monitored and if necessary loaded automatically.

What type of generator is suitable for emergency power supply?

The electrical installation in a building is normally with three-phases and 63A fused (3x 400, 230V / 50 Hz). The various outlets (1~ 230V) in the buildings are spread across the three different phases.

A generator should be selected by the sort and power of the connected electrical consumers which are necessary in case of power failure, eg lighting, heating, telephone, computer, garage door opener, groundwater pumps, etc.

A basic distinction is between one and three-phase power generators. Single phase (1~ 230V) power generators can feed into a three-house grid (3~400V, 230V). This is useful when there are no rotary current (3~ 400V) loads, such as three-phase supply washing machines or electric pumps.

The following generators are recommended for emergency power supply in particular:

Where can an emergency generator be installed?

An emergency generator can be used in many places. Enclosed (super silent) generators can easily placed outdoors. For all generators a protected accommodaton under a roof, in a shed, garage or basement is recommended.

By operation of a generator in closed roomes it has to be ensured, that all exhaust gases are led through a dense exhaust pipe to the outside, and that appropriate incoming air and combustion air quantities are guaranteed.
